Meet our Music Therapist

Woman with guitar smiling, wearing floral cardigan on blue background

Gabrielle (Gaby) Hicks graduated with her bachelor’s degree in music therapy from Illinois State University in 2019 and completed her internship at Midwest Music Therapy Services in St. Louis, Missouri. She obtained her MT-BC credential in 2020 and has experience working in many different settings. Gaby began her career in private practice working with young children all the way up to older adults with diagnoses of Autism, Down Syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and more. She currently works full time at Vitas Hospice working with patients with terminal diagnoses such as cerebral atherosclerosis, COPD, heart failure, etc.

Gabrielle Hicks, MT-BC

Gaby moved to Davenport with her husband and daughter in April 2024 for hernew job with Vitas as well as her lifelong dream to live close to Disney World.Outside of work, Gaby enjoys traveling, going to Disney, karaoke, and playing withher 2 year old daughter.

Gaby would like parents to know that music therapy can be used to address avariety of goals with their children. She can work hand in hand with speech andoccupational therapy to reinforce goals they are working on in these therapies byusing music as a different and unique approach. When you think about learningyour ABC’s, how do you typically learn? To music of course! Everyone knows theABC song. This is one simple example of how music can be used to reinforceimportant information to make it easier for children to obtain.

Gaby will use client preferred music along with many different instruments such as drums, tambourine, ukelele, guitar, keyboard, shakers, xylophone, boom whackers, rain sticks, and more to find what works best for your child to create the most productive environment for them. She will take the goals your child has in other therapies as well as any other goals parents would like to have addressed and use music as a new approach to these goals. Music activates a different part of the brain making it easier for right brained individuals to obtain information through music or a musical approach. By involving your child in music therapy, they will have the opportunity to address their speech or other goals through singing, instrument play, improvisation, songwriting, and movement to music.
